On Friday, December 15, 2017, at the Orlando Marriott Lake Mary, Sanford Alumnae Chapter will present its 4th Annual Crimson and Pearl Affair Scholarship Gala. The public is invited to join the Sanford Alumnae Deltas in raising funds to support scholarships for graduating high school seniors, youth education programs for girls and boys, and local initiatives (political awareness, social action, physical health, mental health, economic development) to strengthen Seminole County. Since the chapter’s inception in 1984, it has awarded more than 70 college scholarships to graduating seniors of Seminole County high schools. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was founded in January 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need. With over 200,000 members throughout the United States and around the world, Delta Sigma Theta is the largest organization in the world comprised primarily of African American women. “This chapter has a 33 year history of service to Seminole County,” notes Sanford Alumnae Chapter President, Sheila Steele, “with our many service programs to include: voter registration, food drives to support local food pantries, AIDS and HIV Awareness programs, American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Backpacks for Kids, Adopt a School, and many more. Gala proceeds will enable us to continue existing programs and develop new ones to serve the growing needs of the less fortunate in our community.” This year’s Gala is expected to exceed 250 attendees. The chapter’s Public Servant Award will again be presented to an individual in Seminole County who exemplifies the sorority’s ideals of service, leadership, and empowerment. Captain Kip Beacham of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office will receive this coveted award for 2017 at the gala.
