Dr. King CelebrationIn Leesburg

LEESBURG - The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemoration Committee of Lake and Sumter Counties (MLKCC) will have its annual tribute to the civil rights leader with a CommUnity Breakfast at 7:30 am Friday, January 14th and Ecumenical Service at 5:30 pm Sunday, January 16.   Both events will be held at Venetian Gardens Center at 1 Dozier Circle, Leesburg, Florida 34748.

“We look forward to a great turnout for our annual Dr. King programs, which will be educational and entertaining,” said Ms. Carolyn Samuel, President of MLKCC. “Our 2022 Dr. King celebration program will be our first in-person event since the pandemic and attendees’ safety is a top priority. Social distancing will be observed and masks required.”

Ms. Mae Hazelton, a community activist and co-chairwoman of All About the Ballots and Black Women’s Roundtable is the quest speaker for the annual MLKCC CommUnity Breakfast, which also recognizes individuals who have made a positive impact on Lake or Sumter County communities. The CommUnity Breakfast program also provides opportunities for local school students and residents to showcase their talents and eat a full breakfast.

A Christian play titled, “He’s Coming Back”, will highlight the 2022 Ecumenical Service or church program, which pays homage to the contributions Reverend Dr. King made to the religious community.  The play, written by Christine King, a Lake County resident, is about four custodians who maintain the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial and have a discussion about an upcoming event.

Admission to both events are free.  However, donations are accepted. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
